REVOLUTION IN OUR LIFETIME
Description:
The first release from the Vanguard Squad! Revolution
In Our Lifetime is a split-45 by Asprin and Bambouche that features two variations
on the theme of armed resistance, echoing the idea that solidarity
gives voice to struggle. The A-side, Asprin’s “Revolushun,” is
a combination of commentary on Apartheid and the American civil rights
movement of the ‘60s. The B-side, Bambouche’s “Vanguard
Squad Main Title Theme,” combines excerpts from a Black Panther
speech with hip-hop gun talk snippets. The record features handmade
letterpress covers. Asprin and Bambouche bring their own brand of oral
tradition to modernize the discussion on the importance of dissent
in culture. An amalgamation of dialectic speech and bombastic programming,
the music is an anthemic summon for subversion.
Dissidence Begins Within, a book that accompanies the 45, is a samizdat-style
chapbook outlining the tenets of the Vanguard Squad as well as providing
the personal trajectories of Asprin and Bambouche that brought them
to these songs. Each copy of the book features a 2-color hand stamped
cover with hand-stitched binding (no staples). Revolution In Our Lifetime
is limited to 500 copies, while Dissidence Begins Within is limited
to 150 copies; neither will be available long…
With the idea that “faith without works is dead,” the Vanguard
Squad realizes it is important to back this discussion with action.
Therefore, all the profits from this record will be donated between
two organizations; The Integrated Holistic Approach Urban Development
Project (IHA-UDP) in Asprin’s hometown of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,
and The Freedom Archives in San Francisco. Jember Teferra, the wife
of former mayor of Addis Ababa, directs IHA-UDP. Jember was a political
prisoner during the ‘70s who spent years in prison where she
provided medical care and created schools for fellow prisoners. Jember’s
post-prison work in the IHA-UDP addresses the needs of her community
starting with the poorest neighborhoods, providing water and sewage
systems, libraries, schools, orphanages, training programs for prostitutes
and the unemployed, housing for the homeless, and healthcare. The holistic
approach is based on the idea of addressing all the problems that affect
a community at once. The Freedom Archives contain over 5,000 hours
of recorded media of historical struggles dating back from the ‘60s
and carry on through today. They chronicle the progressive history
of international solidarity movements. The Freedom Archives have released
several recordings that prove to be an invaluable resource to activists,
students, and researchers.
