The Sample Operators Union (S.O.U.L.) is an online resource for anyone interested in sample-based audio production. S.O.U.L. is a collective of musicians dedicated to the art of reinterpreting stolen moments from old recordings. Sample-based music has been viewed as the ugly stepchild to “real” music. The impetus driving S.O.U.L. is two-fold. First, to remove the that’s-not-music stigma associated with sample production by demonstrating the art involved in pilfering previously recorded material. Second, to provide in-depth discussion on the techniques and history of the sampler as an instrument. Since the copyright lawsuits of the ‘80s, sample-based music has become a clandestine affair; S.O.U.L. sets out to assist the working class beatmaker in tightening up their studio skills.
