Sleeper Waves formed in 1999 determined to become the world's preeminent rock band. Over time, however, the band adjusted course, and through a series of carefully orchestrated compromises, decided to become the world's preeminent unknown rock band. The distinction was subtle, yet its impact was profound.
Fast forward to 2005: After being included on a couple of local Bay Area compilations, the band finished work on the Gutter Music EP. Luckily, the E.P. was never officially released on the Vanguard Squad label, and it immediately became the most unknown recording by any band that year.
Buoyed by the success of Gutter Music, Sleeper Waves began work on a new EP, entitled Good Morning, Midnight. From the outset, the plan was to show a different side of the band, one that would alienate existing fans, and yet completely fail to expand the band's audience. When word got around about the extent of their ambitions, there was talk that Sleeper Waves had become, as one critic put it, "ironically elitist." In characteristic fashion, the band stayed focused on the task at hand.
In the end, the high-stakes gamble paid off, and Good Morning, Midnight was finished in early 2009. Those fortunate enough to get advanced copies couldn't believe how little they cared about it. Naturally, the early feedback has been a vindication of the band's new direction, and Vanguard Squad immediately went to work to expedite its non-release in 2009.
The name Sleeper Waves was derived from the actual maritime phenomenon of the same name. It is, as the name suggests, a sudden, rushing wall of water that carries the unsuspecting victim out to sea, and drowns him. Whether the band’s music bears any resemblance to this violent act of nature is still unknown.
